Title: Fast Food in the US
Description: Youtube video found at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=on6BSfHlK_w as well as some of the major fast food logos in the US
Rationale: This video and the fact that so many fast food restaurants have originated in the United States tell me two general things about American culture. First, American's (in general) are not very interested in healthy foods. Everything here is very greasy and tastes good, but it generally is not good for you. I believe that Americans are more interested in taste than health. In my home country, our children start eating healthy things from a very young age like rice, fruits, vegetables, and seaweed so when they get older they not only understand that these foods are good for you, but also enjoy eating them. Second, I believe that Americans treat meals as more of an unwanted necessity than a social experience. Fast food is designed for people who do not want to take the time to make their own food or sit and talk with friends or family. Fast food is for busy people who do not want to "waste" time. In my home country, meals are shared with friends and family in order to build relationships and truly enjoy the meal. The meals are viewed as a social time and a pleasurable experience rather than a necessity. In summary, meals in the United States and meals in my home country are generally viewed as being very different from each other. Americans appear to see meals as a necessity and need them quickly to continue their busy lifestyle. They also do not care if the meal is healthy for them or not. Conversely, people in my home country view meals as a social experience and the nutritional value tends to be as important as the taste.

I posted this entry as an example for our American Culture Portfolio. I do not necessarily agree with every statement in the entry - it's just an example for my students.
